Jeremy Scott'un Milano Moda Haftası'nda görücüye çıkardığı couture ve trash'i birleştirip popüler kültürden referanslarla donatarak hazırladığı koleksiyon Moschino'daki yeni koltuğunda tasarımcı olarak ödün vermediğini gösteriyor. Açıkçası Scott, Moschino'nun "moda hayatına geri dönüş projesi" yolunda attığı stratejik bir adım gibi görünüyor tıpkı Dior'un Raf Simons ile yoluna devam etmesi ya da Kenzo'nun imaj değişikliği gibi... Defile görsellerine baktığımda hem yüzümde bir tebessüm oluştu hem de beni günümüzde farklı kültürlerin nasıl global kültür referansları şemsiyesi altında yaşadıkları üzerine düşündürdü.
Bir ülke sınırları içinde yaşayan bir çok kültür var tıpkı bir yorgana dikilen yamalar gibi... Bu 1980'lerde teknolojinin ilerlemesi ve ulaşımın ucuz, kolay olmasıyla hala bitmek tükenmek bilmeyen bir göç akımına neden oluyor. Fakat hikaye burada bitmiyor her ne kadar bir ülke içinde farklı kültürler yaşasa da bu kültürler globalleşen sembollerle bir arada tutulabiliyor. Burada bir arada tutulan kesim ise globalleşen kültür referanslarına ulaşabilen 'şehirli' kesim oluyor (yani bir eşitsizlik durumu da söz konusu). Bu da aslında bu heterojenlik içinde homojen bir popüler kültürün yaşadığını gösteriyor. Buna aynı zamanda "kültürün McDonaldlaşması" da deniyor. Yani dünyaca ünlü firmaların logoları, yarattıkları kodlar ve semboller herkes tarafından tanılınıyor ve biliniyor, bu da şehirli (elit) kesim içinde ortak referans noktaları oluşturuyor her ne kadar farklı kültürel kimliklere sahip olsalar da...
Jeremy Scott, Moschino için tasarımlarında hiphop kültürü, Chanel, McDonalds ve kraker, çikolata markalarının tanınmış imajlarına yer vermiş. Özellikle bunu da birçok farklı etnik kökenli modeller ile yansıtması, küreselleşen modern dünyamızda farklı kültürlerin nasıl popüler kültür kodları içinde barındığının adeta vücuda gelmiş hali.
Jeremy Scott's couture-trash meets up with pop-culture in his debut as creative director of Moschino in Milan Fashion Week surely makes us smile and think about our society today - is globalization really creating many distinct and various identities and cultures or is it homogenizing the culture where we can find a lot of common meeting points as it is pointed out as "McDonalization of culture" or is it going both ways ? Scott shows that as a designer he didn't compromise his usual style which shows that Moschino made a strategic move, like Dior did with Raf Simons (or Kenzo reinvented itself with its new image), to awaken Moschino from 'its long and deep sleep'
When we think about our world today, it is safe to say that it is going both ways in the sense that after 1980s there was a tremendous migration wave in which people were on the move all the time due to many reasons like education, better job opportunities... The cheap and easy travelling and also advances in technology made it further possible for people to move. Indeed, today in the world there is no country where there is a homogenous culture, every country is like a patchwork. There are people living in different countries for different reasons. We are "on the move" all the time. The age of globalization on the one hand creates this paradox of distinct cultures are spreaded out on the world. But on the other hand, it is homogenizing the culture in the sense that there are well-established and well-known symbols of McDonalds, Sponge Bob or Chanel creating a common ground which everyone would know.
Jeremy Scott's designs for Moschino deriving from the hiphop culture, Chanel, McDonalds and junkfood brands make use of the popular reference points recognizable from the urbanites which is a common reference point for all of us creates a common ground. As there are models from a lot of different ethnic backgrounds also show that the distnctive identities adopting the popular codes in our globalized modern society is the embodiment of the paradox of homogeneous and/or heterogenous culture(s).
